One of the funniest parts of becoming an adult is realizing nobody hands you the answers. At some point, you just start making decisions and hope they hold up.
As a kid, I assumed adults had everything figured out. Teachers, parents, managers, doctors. I thought there was some invisible point where confidence arrived and uncertainty disappeared. Then I became an adult. Turns out, a lot of people are just experienced at making educated guesses. That’s not a criticism, it’s reality.
You buy a house without knowing exactly what you’re getting into. You become a parent without a perfect manual. You accept a new job hoping it matches the interview. You start a business without knowing if anyone will care. You pick a major, you change careers, you move across the country. Most of life’s biggest decisions don’t come with certainty. They come with enough information to make your best judgment and enough uncertainty to keep you humble.
I think that’s why confidence can be misleading. Some of the most confident people in the room are wrong. Some of the quietest people have spent years thinking through what everyone else is saying. Confidence and certainty aren’t the same thing. Neither are experience and perfection.
The older I get, the more I appreciate people who are willing to say I don’t know. Not because they know less, but because they’re comfortable admitting there’s still more to learn. There’s something refreshing about that. It leaves room for curiosity, room for changing your mind, room for someone else to know more than you do without turning it into a competition.
Maybe that’s what growing up actually is. Not finally having all the answers. Just getting comfortable making decisions without needing all of them.
