Self-care is vital

Posted on July 24, 2026July 24, 2026 by Ginnefine

Self-care has a branding problem.

Somewhere along the way, it became associated with the softer version of taking care of yourself. Rest, candles, spa days, face masks, treating yourself.

Nothing is wrong with any of that.

It just leaves out the part where self-care is often inconvenient. Sometimes it is not relaxing at all. Sometimes it is the thing you keep avoiding because it requires effort, follow-through, or honesty you do not feel like dealing with yet.

That is the part people do not always package well.

Self-care is not always about escaping your life. A lot of the time, it is about making your life easier to return to. It is handling the thing that has been sitting in the back of your mind for too long. It is choosing the less exciting option because you know the easier one is only easier for right now.

That kind of care does not feel like a reward.

It feels like maintenance. And I do not mean that in a boring way. Maintenance is what keeps things from falling apart. It is not glamorous, but it matters. We understand that with almost everything else. Cars need maintenance. Homes need maintenance. Relationships need maintenance. Systems need maintenance.

People do too.

The problem is that we usually wait until something feels urgent before we treat it like it matters.

We wait until we are exhausted to rest. We wait until something hurts to pay attention. We wait until the stress is loud enough to justify taking it seriously. By then, self-care becomes recovery instead of care. That does not mean you can prevent everything. Life is life. Things pile up, routines get interrupted, and some seasons are just heavier than others.

But there is a difference between needing a break and constantly ignoring the signs that one is coming.

Sometimes self-care means rest. Sometimes it means discipline.

Sometimes it means asking for help, changing the pace, saying no, making the appointment, taking the walk, having the conversation, or finally admitting that something is not working.

None of that is cute. But it is care.

And the older I get, the more I think the most useful kind of self-care is the kind that helps you stay honest with yourself. Not perfect. Not optimized. Just honest, before ignoring what you need becomes the routine you are used to.
