Pets have a way of making a house feel like it belongs to them.
Cats especially.
They choose their spots, claim their routines, interrupt whatever you’re doing, and somehow turn all of it into part of the day. At first it’s funny. Then it’s normal. Then one day you realize the house has adjusted around them.
That’s the part that stays with me.
Not just the loss, but the way their presence filled ordinary moments without needing to do much at all. A cat can be half-asleep across the room and still make the space feel less empty.
When they’re gone, you miss them. Of course you do.
But you also remember them in ways that are warm, not just sad.
You remember the personality. The habits. The little things they did that made no sense and somehow made perfect sense because it was them.
I think that’s the gift pets leave behind.
Evidence that something sweet lived in your everyday life for a while and made it better in small, consistent ways.
International Cat Day feels like a good time to remember that kind of love. The kind that shows up quietly, takes over your routine, leaves fur on things, and gives you stories you keep telling long after they’re gone.
Because even after the house gets quieter, the joy doesn’t disappear.
It just becomes something you carry differently.
